Does NovoEd support learners in China?

NovoEd learning experiences are available for learners in China. As NovoEd is not a legal entity in China, we are legally prevented from offering infrastructure resources / servers within its borders. We use AWS CloudFront in edge locations to optimize experience in mainland China.

China limits its global internet traffic through what is known as the Great Firewall, resulting in sporadic periods of increased traffic and slow load times due to one connection from mainland China to the outside world. Factors such as time of day (e.g. during the work day vs. early morning / late night) and location can impact NovoEd’s page load speed. Most commonly this manifests as video timeout.

What options are there for optimizing platform performance in China?

Based on success with current clients, NovoEd has the following recommendations:

  • Companies have high-speed connections from inside mainland China to outside. Our clients have used such allowlisting of the NovoEd site to be routed through their connections for the fastest experience for employees in China. These connections are used for other components of IT in these companies and are not created for NovoEd specifically.

  • Learners can use the NovoEd iOS or Android mobile app, to download content for offline consumption. Downloading content during a time of day when internet speed is faster will facilitate content downloads. In addition, the earning of points or course completions get registered even from offline interaction with the course.

  • We have also seen enterprise clients use local video hosting for their lesson videos to speed up the load of the most bandwidth sensitive part of the learning experience. If the above options do not provide necessary support, videos can be hosted on Azure or other corporate file sharing services in the China office for the China offerings.
