NovoEd provides the opportunity to have both project-based and question-based assessments through free-form assignments and structured quizzes. Assignments are customizable and enable learners to submit a variety of different materials from text to PDFs and even videos. Additionally, assignments can be anonymously peer reviewed using a teaching team customized form.
Assignments form the core of the NovoEd platform: students have the opportunity to learn by doing in meaningful partnership with their peers to create rich, shared understanding of course content. When placing assignments onto the platform, make sure the assignments are presented in a clear and straightforward manner. How can you best present the assignment deliverables? What examples can you provide learners?
Students hand in their assignment through submissions. Note that students are able to revise their assignment up to the deadline. After that, revisions are no longer possible.
- Clear description of assignment goals and requirements
- Scaffolding students towards success by continuously building forward on their knowledge

Peer reviews are a key component to effective online evaluations at scale. NovoEd has a robust peer review engine, as well as the ability for instructor to calibrate reviews during the course itself.
A wide variety of assignment types lend themselves for peer review. Whether learners are completing the same assignment on the same topic or on a different topic, learning from each other and getting/lending a fresh set of eyes to work helps learners grow together. Along the process from the beginning to approaching the end of the course, peer reviews will help learners in their journey to master the course materials. Note that peer reviews are best suited for synchronous courses, as they have to be completed in a specific time frame. Here’s more information on how to set up peer reviews.
Calibration of reviews can be done by having students ‘practice’ reviewing based on teaching team reviews. Please refer to this article for more information on setting up Peer Review Calibration.
Before incorporating a peer review component into an assignment, consider the following questions:
- How can you make the review process as simple and effective as possible?
- How many peer reviews will learners be required to complete?
Pedagogical Foundations Tips and Ideas
- Engages learners deeply by forcing them to act as both a creator and evaluator
- Provides the opportunity to view peers’ work

You can enable an optional “approval” workflow for assignments. This workflow will help ensure the quality of submissions when enabled by requiring assignment submissions to be approved to receive credit for completion. Submissions may also be sent back for revision with feedback if they do not meet the desired quality bar. At a high level, when enabled on an assignment, submissions go into a pending state. Pending submissions are in a queue for approval review. Submissions can be approved, awarding points and completion, or sent back for revision. In either case, review feedback may be left for the learner. If sent back for revision the learner may revise and resubmit for approval.

Quizzes can provide students with almost immediate access to scores, correct answers, explanations, and feedback. When placing the quizzes into your course, consider what it will be like for the student to take it.
Note that while lecture page and video quizzes can be either assessment or practice quizzes (i.e. unlimited tries), assignment quizzes will always be assessment quizzes.
Pedagogical Foundations Tips and Ideas
