To create an assignment, first, enter “edit mode” by selecting “Edit Content” from the drop-down menu on the upper right-hand side:
You should be able to recognize that you are in edit mode at all times by the banner that will appear on your lesson page:
Hover your mouse and click “Add” in the appropriate section:
This will trigger the component menu on the left hand side of the page:
Select “Assignment” in order to add it directly to your lesson page.
You can then decide if the assignment will be completed individually or as a team. For more information about teams, see here. If it is a team assignment, you may be taken through additional steps as detailed in the previous link.
When you click on your selected assignment-type, add your submission format:
You will then be taken to the Submission Format page. Most assignments on NovoEd make use of the Custom Submission Template, for which you can mix and match the following options:
You will then be able to utilize the rich text field to write an assignment introduction and directions, as shown below. You can add additional sections by clicking on the “+” buttons below the introduction text area.
Note: The character limit for short text submissions is 255.
Once you select “save,” you will be redirected to the lesson page, where you can continue to set up your assignment.
You can always edit your Submission Guidelines and Input Formats by selecting the pencil button to the right-hand side of the appropriate section.
To title your assignment, add click directly on the default title, “Assignment.”
Customize your title as desired, and then outline assignment expectations in the rich text editor below:
You can save your expectations by clicking away from the rich text editor.
When creating an assignment, you will have the option to list it as a to-do by clicking on the gray arrow to the right-hand side of the component. It should turn orange when you click it.
You can always re-click to remove the to-do.
To make further edits, click on the pencil button above the to-do button to trigger a drop-down menu.
To add a deadline, select the option from the drop-down menu and click directly on the date that will appear beneath the assignment title. Note that the date and time you choose will be relative to your own time zone. You can also choose to set a hard deadline here.
From that same drop-down menu, you can also add resources, including:
- Word Documents
- Excel Spreadsheets
At any point, you can remove the resource by selecting “Delete” from the adjacent button.
To set Submission Privacy, select it from the drop-down menu listed above. Select your preferred privacy and select “update.”
The privacy settings will be viewable to learners at the bottom of the assignment.
When you are happy with all your settings, you can exit edit mode and view!
You can enable a submission approval workflow to ensure quality of work. Facilitators, mentors or instructors can approve or reject submissions while providing feedback. Submission approval encourages iteration through expert feed. Please see this feature guide on how to enable assignment submission approval.
NovoEd Tip: As a course administrator, even if the assignments are not yet released, you will be able to see all assignments. Assignments are not available for learners to view until after the assignment is released. Additionally, learners will never see the editing menu that admins see at the bottom of an assignment.
