Some assignments may require or enable you to submit video or audio recordings for your submissions. There are a variety of options to record and submit your videos and audio easily right in your browser or with a preferred device.
Record with Web Browser
Learners are able to record video and/or audio from a computer webcam and/or microphone as part of an assignment submission directly with supported browsers. For video submissions, learners will have the option to upload a video file or record a video. This is currently available only for certain browsers, so please switch to Chrome, Firefox, or Edge browsers to enable this tool.
Supported Browsers
- Google Chrome
- Mozilla Firefox
- Microsoft Edge
Note: NovoEd does not support this ability for Safari.
Features and Limitations
- Countdown: A 3-second timer will countdown before the start of the recording
- Reviewing the recorded video prior to submission
- Re-recording/deletion of the video
- The maximum limit for recording is set at 30 minutes (720P); the max limit is 750MB for file size
- Not all browsers or devices may be enabled for directly recording video or audio in one’s browsers. In that case, an error message will be displayed and the user can upload a file instead.
How to Record with Web Browser
1. When first accessing this tool from a video/audio assignment, you will need to grant permission to NovoEd to access your microphone and/or webcam
2. After granting permission, press the red record button to begin your recording session. It will countdown from 5 seconds, so be sure to be prepared.
3. After you are done recording, click on “Stop Recording.” You will be able to play and review your video afterward.
4. You may choose to “Restart” your recording if you would like to re-record or “Add to My Submission” if you are prepared to submit it for the assignment.
Mobile App:
Users are also able to record audio/video for assignments natively in the app.
For Android users:
If your video is not rotating for landscape mode, go to your phone Settings > Turn “Auto Rotate” ON
How to Give Permission to Microphone, Camera
Upon first launching the tool, you will be asked to grant permission to your computer’s mic and/or camera. Denying access will be honored the next time one attempts to record and will require manual permission.
Here are instructions on how to manually grant permission according to your browser:

Upload, Share Videos
You may upload a video to a video hosting site such as YouTube or Vimeo to create a shareable URL link, or directly upload the video to the assignment (if permitted by the course).
Method 1: Uploading a video to a shared site
You can upload your video to a video hosting site to create a shareable URL link. While many hosting sites exist, we recommend YouTube (www.youtube.com) or Vimeo (www.vimeo.com) for your NovoEd course.
Instructions for uploading your video to YouTube
Once you have the video uploaded, you will then be able to see a URL that you can copy/paste into the assignment on NovoEd.
Note: Make sure that your privacy setting is set to Unlisted, which means that only those with the link can see it.
Instructions for uploading your video to Vimeo
Once you have the video uploaded, you will then be able to see a URL that you can copy/paste into the assignment on NovoEd.
Note: Make sure you set your privacy setting to Anyone (Allow anyone to see this video) or Hide this video from Vimeo.com (Plus+PRO account only).
Method 2: Uploading a video directly to NovoEd
You may be able to upload directly by choosing a file from your computer. Video file formats supported are .mp4, .mov, .flv, and .avi (maximum size limit: 750MB)
When selecting "Save & Submit", you should be prompted with the message below on your successful upload.
When clicking on your View Submission, you will be able to preview your assignment submission.
Having difficulty with your video?
Note that not all browsers will have the capability to record in-browser and upload to NovoEd. Please use Chrome or Firefox for this functionality. Additionally, there will usually be some time for us to transcode your video file before it is viewable. This is normal and you can still submit it before it has completed transcoding.
